Toby Jugs, sometimes called philpot, are pottery jugs made form of a seated person, or just a head- known as character jugs. these are sometimes an identifiable historical figure. they are typically a heavy-set and , jovial man with a beer, pipe, or tobacco. Usually dressed in 18th-century attire including tricorne hats. The hat usually forms the spout for pouring. these were originally salt glazed, and were by Staffordshire potters in the 1760s. they may be a development of similar Delft jugs that were produced in the Netherlands. production late spread throughout england and then to other countries
